Choosing the wrong visa in Indonesia can create unnecessary complications. Two of the most common options are the Visa on Arrival (VOA) and the B211 Visit Visa.
They are not interchangeable.
Visa on Arrival (VOA)
Best for:
- Short-term tourism
- 30-day stay
- Extendable once for 30 days
VOA is simple. You obtain it upon arrival at the airport. However, it cannot be extended beyond 60 days total.
It does not allow:
- Working
- Business operations
- Long-term stay planning
B211 Visit Visa
Best for:
- Longer stays (up to 180 days with extensions)
- Social visits
- Pre-arranged entry before arrival
The B211 visa must be applied for before entering Indonesia. It provides more flexibility in duration but still does not allow employment.
Key Differences
VOA:
- Quick and airport-based
- Short duration
- Minimal documentation
B211:
- Applied in advance
- Longer stay potential
- Requires sponsor documentation
Which One Should You Choose?
If your stay is under 60 days and purely tourism, VOA is sufficient.
If you plan to stay longer than 60 days or prefer structured planning before arrival, B211 is more appropriate.
Using the wrong visa for your intended activity creates avoidable legal risk.
